LED Strips have achieved immense popularity in home decor lighting. LEDs are nowadays preferred over incandescent and halogen bulbs. They are normally brighter, more efficient, long-lasting, easily controllable, produce less heat, and easily programmable. LED strip lighting has become the most sought-after. They are affordable for both commercial as well as home lighting purposes. Buying behind desk LED strips may be completely straight forward, but there are some of the points you need to keep in mind to choose the best one:

Yes. As the LED strip lights usually have half an inch width and length of about 16 feet, they can easily be cut as per your requirement using a pair of scissors along the dotted lines.

Conclusion

The LED world is really vast & it can be seemingly difficult for a novice buyer to navigate through the Dos and don’ts of purchasing these lights. From the above 5 top-ranking LED strip lights, our personal favorite is the Philips Hue LightStrip Plus.

It is due to the fact that showcases amazingly seamless sync with movies and music, while others might be prone to certain glitches.

What’s more? The LED Strip can last as long as 22 years, and you can even extend the existing length with the 3-foot extensions sold separately.

Moreover, the light strip has been designed to provide protection from any water seepage, or moisture in the room with a strong silicone build around it.

Even though the price is a bit high as compared to the LIFX Z or DayBetter LED, it still is without a doubt the king among the ministers given its high-quality build that ensures longevity and durability without any compromise on the style. So, if you are wondering what to buy for your desk backlight needs, we would highly recommend the Philips Hue LightStrip Plus.

But, at the end of the day, it boils down to what you need. So, any option from this list would be a great choice for behind desk lighting needs.

Things to Look for in a Desk for Dual or Multiple Monitors

Whether you are planning to buy a desk for dual or multiple monitor setup for home or office, you can have countless numbers of options.

But picking the right desk from so many options is like picking a needle from a heap of garbage.

You should know how to choose the best desk for a dual monitor. To help you in making the right decision, here we are going to tell the things you should consider when buying a dual desk.

Best Dual Monitor Computer Desks

Space

When buying a computer desk, the first and foremost thing you need to take into consideration is the space. It will depend on how many monitors you wish to mount on the top of the desk. Generally, a dual computer monitor desk will have adequate space for at least two monitors of average size. But if you want to fit more monitors or giant-sized monitors, you will need a spacious desk.

Apart from placing multiple monitors, you will also need more space to clear the clutter. Regardless of whether your rationale behind going for this kind of desk is playing games or doing any other piece of work, you may not want to end up cramping for space. Enough room on the desk will allow you to do your work with ease and comfort.

In the market, you are likely to find L-shaped and U-shaped desks. The latter is generally believed to be more spacious in comparison to the former.

Height Adjustable Options

This feature is closely linked to ergonomics. Depending on whether you are tall or short in height, you must be able to adjust the height of your desk so that you do not experience any discomfort while using it. Whether you consider working on the desk being seated or standing erect, this feature will come in handy for you in both situations.

You will find the height adjustment option with most computer desks available in the market. But you may want to go with a desk that allows you to work in seated as well as standing positions. Being able to maintain the optimum height while working on these positions will have an impact on your posture and well-being. So, you may not want to leave any stone unturned in ensuring that you go for the best piece.

Furthermore, the type of height adjustment option will also matter in the selection of a computer desk for multiple monitor setup. Some come across with electronic options that are automatic. Others may necessitate manual setup. Choose your piece wisely on this front by factoring in all your requirements.

Handedness

Though overlooked by the majority of people who consider shopping for computer desks, handedness is an element that can save you from a lot of hassle later on if you consider it at the time of buying your computer desk. Handedness is all about considering which of your two arms – left or right – you use primarily while performing your tasks.

Ideally, you would want to ensure that the hand on which you rely on the most for executing all your tasks gets more share of the space. Plus, you may also want your desk to be in alignment with the side on the side of your primary arm. L-shaped desks are known to fare better than U-shaped desks on this count.

However, while choosing one between the two versions of the computer desk, you may also want to consider if handedness features on top of the list of your requirements. It will be particularly important as you may need to overlook one or a couple of other features to get this one right.

Legroom

Resting your feet would be as much important as other factors while working with your computer on your desk. A computer desk for multiple monitor setup with sufficient legroom will help you work for hours without feeling fatigued. Therefore, make sure you do not overlook this important feature while taking the final call on your computer desk.

What Cable Do I Need to Play at 144hz?

For those who need those answers fast, here’s a short version of what should work best for you.

  • A DisplayPort 1.4 cable will let you play 144Hz at 1440p resolution and 120Hz at 4K resolution.
  • An HDMI 2.0 or newer cable will also provide the same performance provided that your monitor supports 144Hz over HDMI.
  • A DVI Dual-link, HDMI 1.2 or newer, or DisplayPort 1.2 cable will work well enough for 144Hz gaming at 1080p resolution

Playing games smoothly at 1080p or 4k resolutions require more than just a good enough monitor; you have to make sure that you get one with 144Hz if you want seamless motion and a CPU with a good enough processor and graphics card.

However, one thing that even some gaming enthusiasts tend to miss out is the cable. You need to know the most suitable type of cable for 144Hz gaming that will work best with the best 1440p gaming monitors.

Why did we recommend those options in particular?

To answer that, we need to get a better understanding of how display monitors and each type of cable works.

What does 144hz mean?

144Hz refers to a monitor’s refresh rate. The refresh rate is commonly mistaken for frame rate, but there is a distinct difference between the two.

Refresh Rate of Gaming Monitor
The frame rate refers to how often the source of data (the CPU) can send information to the display in a second while the refresh rate refers to how fast the display can updates its “buffer” so it can keep changing the images in the same amount of time.

It’s possible to have a setup that can have a frame rate of over 144 frames per second but only 144 of those frames will be shown thru the display.

A Road for Data

One of the reasons why gamers tend to get the wrong cable for their monitors is the common belief that any wire is good enough as long as it creates a physical connection between the rig and the monitor.

However, that’s far from the truth.

monitor data cable

The best way to explain the need for a good cable is to compare the hardware to a road. The monitor needs to keep getting data from the rig to display your games, and a high resolution with 144Hz refresh rate will require a lot of data, at least 20 gigabytes of data per second in most cases.

Think of the data as vehicles and the cable as the road. Sure, any road will allow vehicles to pass through, but if there’s too much vehicles and the road is not wide enough, you can’t expect the vehicles to move as fast as needed. Not enough cars, not enough data to provide a constant display. You want to make sure that the road – the cable – can accommodate the traffic.

What If I Pick the Wrong Cable?

We’re not saying that playing at 144Hz without thinking much about the type of cable is impossible, but having a less-than-optimal choice can cause a wide variety of issues.

Here are the most common problems that you can expect if your cable can’t transmit enough data to your 144Hz-capable display monitor.

  • Low refresh rate – there’s just not enough data passing through the capable, forcing you to play at lower frequencies.
  • Flickering – In some cases, there are split seconds where the lack of data will cause your monitor to not even display a few frames, creating a lot of flickering.
  • Failure to display – the worst-case scenario: there’s just not enough data for the monitor to display anything at all, rendering your 144Hz monitor useless.

When it comes to cable options you have a few main options, but they can be classified into three categories based on their interface: DVI, HDMI, and DP

Our Cable Recommendations

DVI

DVI or Digital Video Interface was the mainstream option for 1080p gaming. A DVI cable’s most prominent feature is the broad heads and ports connecting the display monitor to the CPU, specifically the video card’s DVI port. DVI can be further divided into DVI-A (Analog) DVI-I (Integrated) and DVI-D (Digital), but since we’re connecting the cable to 144Hz monitors, we’ll limit the discussion to DVI-D cables.

DVI cables can either be single or dual link depending of the number of transmitters used to send data. While a single link DVI cable is good enough for playing at 1080P and at 60Hz refresh rate, the Dual link DVI can handle the same resolutions at 120Hz or 144Hz.

Great DVI Cable

Sure, 144Hz gaming above 1080p may be beyond what a DVI cable can do, but if you don’t plan to play at higher resolutions, this DVI cable is the best budget-friendly alternative you’ll find out there.

HDMI

HDMI or High-Definition Multimedia Interface is what you’d call a “2-in-1” option since it allows the transfer of both audio and video data. An HDMI cable looks a lot more compact than a DVI one, and looks a lot more similar to USB ports, featuring a trapezoid-shaped port. There was a time when HDMI wasn’t even an option for 144Hz gaming at any resolution, but the release of HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 has changed that.

If there’s one thing that might keep you from picking an HDMI cable, that would be your monitor’s limitations. While most monitors today work with HDMI cables, only a few of them like the Dell D2719HGF support 144HZ over HDMI, which means you have to be careful when picking even among 144Hz monitors to avoid getting locked to lower frequencies.

High Speed HDMI Cable

HDMI 2.1 is as good as it gets, and this pick has a good balance of cost to performance. While playing at 144Hz is not possible at 4k resolution with this cable, it shouldn’t be an issue if you’re playing at 1440p or lower. Besides, 4k at 120Hz is not that bad.

DisplayPort

DP or DisplayPort is the newest of the three interfaces, and is now considered the mainstream option for most gaming enthusiasts. A DP cable has an asymmetrical design resembling a rectangle with one sloped end. Today, DP cables are considered the mainstream option not just for 144Hz gaming, but even for gaming at lower frequencies at different “standard” resolutions.

While older versions of DP (up to 1.2) already support 144Hz at 1080p resolution, version 4.1’s introduction of DSC (Display Stream Compression) made it possible to achieve a similar level of performance at higher resolutions without sacrificing too much image quality. To make things even better, DP cables can be made compatible with DVI, HDMI, and even older VGA (Video Graphics Array) ports provided that you have the right adapter.

4K Resolution up to 240Hz

Accel’s DP1.4 cable will easily handle 144Hz gaming at 1440p resolutions or lower, but it can reach up to 240Hz with Display Stream Compression. Of course, 120Hz at those resolutions and 60Hz at 8k resolution are always welcome options, especially considering the cable’s reasonable cost.

What Cable do I use for 144hz?

Finding the best cable for 144Hz gaming is just part of optimizing your setup. There are a few more things you need to consider if you want to make sure you get the most out of your display.

  • Always go for cables and monitors certified by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Uncertified products may deliver less than ideal results (despite advertising a certain level of performance).
  • Always check the integrity of the cable before picking; any signs of deep “dents” on the cable skin may indicate damage and affect the performance of your cable.
  • Some monitors support 144Hz, but not for all types of interfaces. Even the best cable won’t deliver a good enough performance if its interface is locked to a lower refresh rate.
  • Using adapters for different types of interfaces and cables may work, but don’t expect the same level of quality as when you’re using the same interface.
  • Make sure your CPU is powerful enough to render games at a fast enough frame rate. The rule of thumb is that the game’s average FPS (frames per second) should be equal or higher than the monitor’s refresh rate.
  • Some visual tearing and irregular response times may occur if your CPU can render more than 144FPS. You can eliminate this problem by enabling V-sync to limit the game’s frame rate to up to 144 FPS, equal to your monitor’s refresh rate.

That wraps up this talk about picking the right cable for 144Hz gaming. We hope this has helped you create a more optimal gaming setup.

This list should cover your streaming mic needs, but why exactly did we pick those out of the several dozens of other mics out there?

To answer that question, we have to take a closer look at what makes a good microphone for streaming on Twitch and other platforms.

The Best Microphone for Streaming in 2020

1. Blue Yeti – Best Streaming Microphone

If we’re going to limit our recommendation to just one microphone, that would be Blue Yeti. This USB Mic costs just a little over a hundred dollars, which may give you the idea that it’s just a mid-range stand-in mic until you get your hands on a better option. However, the Yeti has what it takes to be your long-term workhorse mic. Sure, the Yeti can be outperformed by a dedicated studio mic, but the sound is clear and loud enough for everyday streams and podcasts. In fact, it’s even good enough for more casual studio recording sessions.

World's #1 USB Mic

Perfect for vocals, musical instruments, podcasting, voiceovers, interviews, field recordings, conference calls.

The Yeti gets even better when you tinker with the dials, more specifically, the pattern dial located at the back. This means the Yeti can switch from a being a Cardiod to a Bidirectional or Omnidirectional mic and go back in seconds. Add the mic’s USB Plug and Play connectivity plus compatibility with almost any audio editing software and you get one of the most versatile and cost-effective options you can use for your streaming setup.

When it comes to looks, the Yeti doesn’t disappoint; it comes in Silver, Black, and “Cool Gray”, and the all-metal body looks like something a professional streamer will actually use. Together with the built-in metal base, the Yeti is heavy enough that it won’t accidentally get tipped over at the slightest bump, plus it also has a rubberized bottom pad to keep it from skidding.

Cons

2. Rode NT-USB – Premium Microphone for Streaming

A studio-level mic is great if your Twitch streams are heavily focused on discussions, which means you may have to go for something beyond a midrange option. The NT-USB claims to nail that level of quality, and, frankly, we agree for the most part. Read on to find out what makes this mic good enough to be on our list.

The NT-USB will give the meteor mic a run for its money when it comes to aesthetics. The clean design, side volume and gain dials, and the matte black finish combined with the rectangular pop filter that it comes with are all designed to tell you that this is a mic for professionals.

Premium Microphone for Streaming

High-quality studio microphone with the USB connectivity, perfect for the serious streamer who invests heavily into their streaming setup.

Our only gripe is that Rode could have used a more stable tripod and pop filter arm so that we don’t have to worry about tipping the mic over with the slightest bump.

The NT-USB may be pricier than other items in this list, but we feel like its recording quality makes it a worthy investment. Its tight cardiod pattern reduces background noise by a good amount even without having to tweak it, giving us one of the clearest recordings. While it’s good at picking up voices, it’s also more likely to pick up noise coming from your keyboard or mouse, so that’s one thing you should take into consideration.

Pros

Cons

3. Blue Snowball iCE – Budget Microphone for Streaming

We have another streaming mic from Blue, but this time it’s an entry-level option, a great budget mic for streaming. At half the price of the Yeti, the Snowball iCE is meant to be the more modern version of the original Snowball, a popular starting mic for podcasters. Does it fit the role as its midrange brother? Is the iCE a worthy successor to the original snowball? Here’s our take on Blue’s budget alternative.

While the Snowball iCE has a plastic body, it is a solidly built piece of hardware. Some streamers will like the minimalistic design and the built-in tripod stand, but we feel like other mics have a better base; you’d want to make sure you’re putting the mic somewhere very stable since we feel like the top-heavy design would make it tip over quite easily.

Great Budget Pick

Custom condenser capsule offers crystal clear audio for both streaming and voice calls like Skype, Facebook and FaceTime.

The Snowball iCE is supposed to be an affordable mic, but that doesn’t come at the cost of quality. It can record sounds with minimal distortions and it doesn’t have a tendency to pick up too much of the sharp consonant sounds (like “t” and “ch”) so it’s perfect for its intended purpose; casual talking over a game stream. Our only beef with it is that it has a very wide sound pattern for a cardioid mic so expect it to pick up a little more noise than usual. Of course, that also means it’s a decent option if you want to record two people sitting side by side during your streams.

Pros

Cons

4. Audio-Technica ATR2500

Audio-Technica is known for the quality of their studio mics, and that same brand of quality can also be found in their midrange cardiod mic, the ATR2500. When it was first released back in 2011, it was one of the best USB mics you can get your hands on. Today, we think that the midrange mic that could still holds up well to this day.

We liked the ATR2500 because of its minimalistic approach to design, with a simple profile and only volume controls and a clean overall look. The mic comes with its own pivoting desk stand which is handy, but we find it rather flimsy and were worried that the mic would tip over on the slightest bump on the table. Some users say otherwise, but we think it could definitely use a more solid base. It also comes with an analog-to-digital converter, so connectivity won’t be a problem.

Built-in headphone jack allows you to directly monitor your microphone output without audible delay.

Sound clarity is not an issue with the ATR2500 unless you’re looking for studio-levels of quality. Comparing it to the previous two recommendations, it clearly outperformed the Fifine 669 (plus you don’t have to hold your head so close to it), but you will still get better results from the Blue Yeti. You can treat it as a compromise between the two, trading a bit of quality for a better price. It’s the only notable issue is that it lacks built-in gain control so you’ll have to use your software to tweak that particular setting.

5. Tonor USB Mic

Tonor really didn’t put a lot of effort into naming this mic, but this entry-level gem is a lot more suprising than it actually is. At barely over 20 dollars, the Tonor USB mic is definitely a good starting option for those who are not entirely sold on getting a dedicated mic. Here’s what we think about Tonor’s entry in this list.

The first thing that we noticed about this USB mic is that it already comes with its own pop filter, a replacement foam, and even an attachment stand for the said filter. It also comes with its own desktop tripod mount that will let you angle your mic any way you want, but the legs don’t lock in place and they could sag under the mic’s weight if the legs are spread out too much.

Extremely cheap microphone for the entry-level streamer. Does the job nicely, but the quality is not the greatest to say at least.

Sure, the mic’s design isn’t the best among the entries in this list, but you’re already getting a lot of value for its price.

We gave the Tonor USB mic a shot and we were impressed at how well the pop filter can cut down sibilance. While some will find the mic a bit too sensitive (it picks up a lot of background noise), it’s not bad enough to keep your voice recognizable. We could hear cracking and hissing every now and then, but again, it’s barely there, which is good enough for an entry-level mic for streaming on Twitch. If you’re really pressed for budget but you want to try a dedicated mic complete with a pop filter, give this one a try.

Pros

Cons

6. Razer Seiren X

Razer is known for their top-of-the-line gaming accessories, and the Seiren X is their attempt to establish their brand to those looking for a dedicated mic for streaming. Unlike other options in this list, the Seiren X is actually specifically marketed towards game streamers, so we’re curious to see if it does its job well.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Seiren X is that it is designed for both form and function. The sleek matte black design looks good enough to be part of any gaming setup. However, it’s also compact enough that it won’t clutter up your desk space and get in the way of your gaming.

One of the nicest looking microphones of them all from the famous gaming brand Razer. However, looks are not everything and there are multiple better choices out there

Another good thing about the mic is that the level of recording quality is already good enough for streaming even without having to mess around with the mic’s settings.

The Seiren X is not as versatile as the Blue Yeti because it lacks the latter’s ability to switch recording patterns. Other, more affordable mics can also perform similar to the Seiren X with enough tweaking. However, if you’re a streamer who would rather think about playing rather than messing with the more technical stuff, this Razer mic’s out-of-the-box performance should be more than enough to keep you covered.

Pros

Cons

7. Antlion Audio ModMic 5

Earlier, we mentioned how built-in mics found in headsets tend to suffer from sound quality. The ModMic 5 is Antlion Audio’s most recent take on combining the sound recording quality of a dedicated mic and the ease of use of a typical headset mic.

The ModMic 5 is actually two mics integrated into a single boom: an omnidirectional one and another, cardiod mic. Switching between the two can be done via a small push switch, making the ModMic 5 a lot more versatile than the average headset mic. To add to the ModMic 5’s versatility, it also comes with a modular mute switch if you need to cut the feed during your stream.

Attachable boom microphone for your gaming headset. Turn any headphones into a proper headset suited for streaming and gaming.

The mic can easily be hooked up to most types of headsets, so you’ll rarely have to worry about compatibility issues. You do have to worry about having two separate wires running to your headset so you need to prepare yourself for a bit of extra cable management.

In terms of sound quality, the ModMic 5 is definitely a few steps above built-in gaming headset mics. However, we feel that it falls just a bit short of “studio quality”; the omnidirectional mic is good at recording sound up close, but it’s not sensitive enough to be used on a separate stand; you will have to keep this mic close to you when streaming. Fortunately, this shouldn’t be an issue if you’re used to streaming with a headset on at all times. If you want something good that’s not a mounted or freestanding mic, the ModMic 5 should definitely be on your “must have” list.

Pros

Cons

8. Fifine USB Mic

The Yeti may be the pound-for-pound premier pick for streaming mics, but what if you don’t feel like going “all-in” on a dedicated mic? The Fifine USB microphone costs less than half of the Yeti, but does it have what it takes to be a good entry-level option for a new streamer? As it turns out, the answer is yes!

Just like the Blue Yeti, the Fifine 669 is a Plug and Play device so you don’t have to worry about downloading extra drivers or software. The 669 also comes with a detachable but rather cheap-feeling tripod so you have to option to leave it on your desk or put it in a mount if you’re desk is already cramped, not that it will be because the 669 is one of the smallest mics we have on our list of recommendations

A cheap plug and play microphone, plug into any available USB port and you’re ready to go.

Despite being one of the more affordable options we came across, the 669’s metal body and no-nonsense design keeps it from looking like a cheap stand-in for a future mic upgrade.

In terms of sound clarity, the Fifine 669 definitely outperforms other entry-level mics and nearly every built-in gaming headset mic. However, it doesn’t have a mute button like our other recommendations, and it’s strictly a cardiod mic. That may seem bad at first glance, but you have to remember that this is an entry-level streaming mic and at such a low price point the 669 is as good as it gets.

Pros

Cons

9. Samson Meteor Mic

Function is the biggest factor when it comes to looking for the best mic for streaming on Twitch, but the Meteor Mic seems to be an exception to this rule. A chrome retro-style body with minimal features gives it a classy, clean look, but this small mic is not just about looking pretty.

The mic barely takes up any desk space, and the built-in rubber-tipped legs can be folded up when it’s not in use. More importantly, the mic can be tilted at an angle so it’s pointed directly towards your mouth for better recording. If you don’t want extra clutter on your desk when playing games, the Meteor Mic also has a threaded base that will let you mount it on a separate stand.

Fold-back legs provide optimal mic positioning and folds up for easy transport.

We were also surprised about the Meteor Mic’s recording quality considering its price. You won’t hear random cracks and pops when recording and the sound turns up much fuller than when you record with an entry-level mic. The sound pattern is relatively tight, but has a good enough range that it can pick up your voice clearly even you’re leaning back on your chair. If only the Meteor Mic had more controls than a mute button and a headphone volume dial, this would easily be on par with the Blue Yeti and other more expensive options in this list.

Pros

Cons

10. Zalman Zm-Mic1

Here’s the situation: you want to start streaming on Twitch right away, but you still A) haven’t decided on what gaming mic to consider or B) still waiting for funds for a mid or high-end option. You have a good set of earphones already, so why not get a budget-friendly option for now? This is exactly why the Zm-Mic1 deserves to be in this list.

The Zm-Mic1 is a clip-on option much like the more expensive Antlion ModMic 5. It attaches to earphones via a clip that fits headphones with thin cables.

This one is for the streamer who simply doesn’t care about audio quality other than it recording sounds. Could also be a good pick if you haven’t decided on what microphone you want but still has to stream meanwhile.

The mic doesn’t look flimsy, and installation is very straightforward. Not bad for something that’s usually available for only ten dollars.

The Zm-Mic1 has an omnidirectional pattern that is surprisingly more sensitive than we thought; you won’t have any problems about it not picking up what you’re saying regardless of how it’s positioned. Will this ten-dollar mic outperform other options in this list? We don’t think so, but for such a cheap option, you have a decent backup mic that will keep you covered until you get your hands on a better option.

What Microphone Should I Get for Streaming?

best streaming microphones

Simply having a microphone for your stream might seem “good enough” for many people, but a typical headset mic may not provide the best streaming experience for the viewer. You have to remember that most mics even in high-end gaming headsets tend to have limited functionality because most of the tech for the headsets is dedicated to the speakers.

These built-in microphones are likely to cause issues like poor reception, static on the feedback, and even unnecessary sounds such as popping (caused by pronouncing certain consonants such as “p” or “b”) or crackling. If you want to sound as clearly as possible in your streams, your best bet is to go for dedicated microphones. Of course, you still have to keep your eye (or ear) out for specific factors.

Budget

Let’s get this out of the way first: no matter what kind of streaming setup you have, you want to make sure your mic fits your budget. After all, having a high-end microphone is pointless if the rest of your setup is compromised due to budget restraints. When making our picks, we also considered options for different price points so we have a mic for high-end, midrange, and entry-level setups.

streaming using microphone on twitch

Directionality

Directionality is easily the most important factor when picking a mic for streaming on Twitch. This factor determines how the mic picks up sound. Streaming mics can fall under any of the three “types” of mic based on directionality:

  • Cardioid or Unidirectional – As the name suggests, a cardioid microphone captures sound coming from a single general direction. If angled the right way, a cardioid mic will be able to pick up your voice while also significantly minimizing the amount of sound beyond a certain angle. This is the perfect type of microphone for a streamer who specializes in lets plays and monologues. In short, if you’re streaming solo, you can’t go wrong with this type of microphone.
  • Bidirectional – Bidirectional microphones are designed to capture sound from two angles, usually from the front and from the rear, while still keeping noises from the sides significantly toned down. This type of mic works best for a streamer who frequently interacts with a guest. If you see yourself partnering with other streamers and having them over to your place, this is a good option for you.
  • Omnidirectional – An omnidirectional mic captures sounds coming from any direction. While the extra sound reception seems like a bad thing for a streamer, it’s actually great if you prefer streaming content that involves moving around a wide room. However, getting the most out of it may require certain additions to your setup (more on that later).

Size

The size of the mic doesn’t necessarily reflect its ability to capture sound or reduce noise. However, you’d still want something that won’t get in the way of your stream. You can’t expect to have a full-sized boom mic in a small room. A good mic is compact enough to fit on your desk or attached to a non-intrusive mount.
We think our recommendations meet all the requirements of what counts as a good mic for streaming, but let’s take closer look at each of them so you have a better idea of what to pick.

Graphics cards can get relatively expensive, and some even cost more than $1000, but you do not need to get the top of the line model.

Most people are not going to use that level of powerfully. There are some options on the market that you can get for under $100.

These are decent cards for the price whether you are getting them for gaming, HD video or for the additional ports. Here we are going to look into some of the best graphics cards under $100 that you can get.

Best Graphics Card under 100

Remember that you get what you paid for. For under $100 you cannot expect these graphics cards to run modern AAA games at 1080p 60 FPS with everything set to the max. You will need to turn the settings down for most games to work smoothly.

The Best Graphics Cards under 100 dollars in 2020

1. Gigabyte GeForce GT 1030 – Best Graphics Card under $100

The GIGABYTE GeForce GT 1030 is a low-profile, single-slot card with nothing more than a heatsink and fan on top. The aluminum heatsink, fan and the PCB itself are Black which is a nice touch but other than that there is nothing much that stands out when it comes to the looks of the card.

When it comes to performance the 1030 is supposed to compete with the AMD Radeon RX 550 as they both fall in a similar price bracket. The performance is similar and the 1030 has an edge over the 550 in some titles but in other titles, the 550 performs slightly better. So the performance will vary from title to title.

Most games are optimized for Nvidia graphics cards and that is where the 1030 will have better performance but there are a few titles that are optimized for AMD hardware and the 550 will come out on top in those games.

Our Pick Under 100

The GIGABYTE GeForce GT 1030 is an impressive card for budget gamers. It is able to run many games at 45-50 FPS at 1080p with all the settings turned down and it can run some older titles at 60 FPS as well. If you need an entry-level graphics card for a small form factor PC then this is a great option to consider.

The GIGABYTE GeForce GT 1030 is able to run games such as Battlefield 1and Doom well above 45 FPS with the settings turned down to low at 1080p. It can run GTA 5 at above 60 FPS using normal settings. Older titles like Skyrim run at 1080p 60 FPS without any issues. It is able to run modern eSports titles, MOBAs and FPS shooter games just fine.

All things considered, the GT 1030 is a decent entry-level card and the GIGABYTE GeForce GT 1030 is a great option for small form factor builds because of the low profile design. The only drawback is that the card comes with a single HDMI port and a DVI port. There is no DisplayPort which might be an issue for some people.

One of the major selling points of this graphics card is that you do not need to upgrade your power supply. The card does not need any external power and draws all the power that it needs from the motherboard. So all you need to do is install it and get to gaming.

Pros

Cons

2. EVGA GT 1030 SC – Premium Affordable Graphics Card

This is another low profile GT 1030 model but this one is from EVGA. The design is minimal and there is no backplate. The card is slightly overclocked out of the box and runs at 1544MHz just like the overclocked Gigabyte version. The card has a Grey shroud and the PCB has been painted to match it. There is a small 80mm fan to keep the temperature in check.

The performance is pretty much the same as the other GT 1030 models but you do get 5 times the performance of Intel integrated graphics so it is better than that. Ports are limited and you only get a single HDMI and DVI port. There is no display port.

Premium Pick

The EVGA GT 1030 SC is a card for budget gamers. It is able to run many games at 45-50 FPS at 1080p with all the settings turned down and it can even run some older titles at 60 FPS. If you need an entry-level graphics card for a small form factor PC then this is another great option to consider.

Like the other GT 1030 models, this one does not need any external power and all you really need to do is plug it into the motherboard and get to gaming. It is able to run games such as Battlefield 1and Doom well above 45 FPS with the settings turned down to low at 1080p. It can run GTA 5 at above 60 FPS using normal settings. Older titles like Skyrim run at 1080p 60 FPS without any issues. It is able to run modern eSports titles, MOBAs and FPS shooter games just fine.

Cons

3. Gigabyte GT 1030 OC-2G – Budget Graphics Card

The GIGABYTE GeForce GT 1030 OC is another low-profile, single-slot card but this one comes with a proper shroud. The card is Black and has Orange accents so the look is very nice indeed. There is a single 80mm fan for cooling. The card comes slightly overclocked out of the box and can boost to 1544 MHz which is not much but it higher than the model that we looked into above.

There is no backplate but the PCB is Black and matches the shroud, which is a very nice touch keeping in mind that this is an entry-level graphics card. The card does not have any RGB lighting and has a very minimal design.

The 1030 is supposed to compete with the AMD Radeon RX 550 as they both fall in a similar price bracket. The performance will vary from title to title. Most games are optimized for Nvidia graphics cards and that is where the 1030 will have better performance but there are a few titles that are optimized for AMD hardware and the 550 will come out on top in those games.

Runner Up

The GIGABYTE GeForce GT 1030 OC is an impressive card for budget gamers. It is able to run many games at 45-50 FPS at 1080p with all the settings turned down and it can run some older titles at 60 FPS as well. If you need an entry-level graphics card for a small form factor PC then this is a great option to consider.

It is able to run modern eSports titles, MOBAs and FPS shooter games just fine.

The only drawback is that the card comes with a single HDMI port and a DVI port. There is no DisplayPort which might be an issue for some people.

4. MSI AMD Radeon R7 240

This is a pretty old card but it is under $100 and you might find it worth it. The card has a very minimal design. It has no shroud and all you get is the Black PCB with the matching heatsink and 80mm fan. This fan can get a bit noisy when the system is under load because of its small size.

The older architecture means that the clock speeds are lower and that the card needs more power. It has a core clock speed of 730 MHz and can boost to 780 MHz. The TDP of the card is 50W.

The R7 240 is not a graphics card that we can recommend for gaming in 2020. If you are on a tight budget and need a graphics card then this is an option that you can look into.

The card is not a very powerful one but you can play games like Fary Cry 3, Max Payne 3, Skyrim and Battlefield 3 once you have tweaked the settings. The preset that you will use with this card will be low. While this is not a card that we would recommend for gaming in 2020, you can run some titles on it if you really need to.

Ports are limited as well. You only get a single HDMI port, DVI port and VGA port. The VGA port is pretty much obsolete in 2020 and I doubt that many people have monitors that use VGA.

Pros

Cons

5. ASUS GeForce GT 710

We have the Asus GT 710 which is a very basic card that comes with a heatsink that matches the Blue PCB. It is a single-slot card that is low-profile and compact. It does not even have a fan as it is passively cooled. That is not because of the efficiency of the card, it is because it is not too powerful in the first place.

This is not a card that we recommend for gaming. Modern integrated graphics are much faster than this graphics card. If you have a 5th generation intel CPU or better, then you can make do without this graphics card.

This is not a card that we recommend for gaming. If you have a very old computer that has trouble processing HD video or need an HDMI port then you can opt to get this graphics card.

We can recommend this card if you have an older CPU that has trouble running video or a system that does not have an HDMI port. This card is inexpensive and will give you an HDMI port, DVI port and a VGA port. There is no display port and you only get a single port for each standard so using multiple displays is going to be tricky.

Pros

Cons

6. ZOTAC GeForce GT 710

Here we have another GT 710 graphics card. This one has a Black PCB and heatsink. Again there is no fan. The card is not meant for gaming. Modern integrated graphics are much faster than this graphics card. If you have a 5th generation intel CPU or better, then you can make do without this graphics card.

Just like the Asus model, this is not a card that we recommend for gaming. If you have a very old computer that has trouble processing HD video or need an HDMI port then you can get this graphics card otherwise you will be better off with integrated graphics or a better graphics card.

We can recommend this card if you have an older CPU that has trouble running video or a system that does not have an HDMI port. This card is inexpensive and will give you an HDMI port, DVI port and a VGA port. There is no display port

What is the Best Low Budget GPU under $100?

What is the Best Low Budget GPU

Let me say that at this price point, you do not really have a lot of options. So things are a bit tricky.

The GT 1030 is the best graphics card of the lot. Specifically the Gigabyte OC model. It is available under $100, comes with a minor overclock out of the box and looks good too. The GT 1030 is the only model that I can recommend for gaming out of all the cards that we have looked into here.

The other models are inexpensive but are not powerful enough for gaming. We only recommend those cards if you have a very old system and need something to handle HD video or if you need an HDMI port.

What Budget Graphics Card Should I Pick?

The GT 1030 is the only option on this list that we can recommend because it is under $100. If the price was not a factor we would recommend that you save some more money and get a better graphics card. Something like the RX 560 or the GTX 1050 is more than ideal for gaming.

These cards can run modern AAA titles and eSports games at 1080p 60 FPS. You cannot run every game at maxed-out settings but once you have tweaked the settings most of the games are playable at 1080p 60 FPS. That is the kind of graphics cards that people are interested in getting and that is the bare minimum that we recommend.

If you are on a tight budget then you will be better off waiting. Save some more money and get a better graphics card. The RX 560 or the GTX 1050 is a bit expensive as compared to the models that we have looked into here but they will last you a long time and they will be worth it in the long run.

To sum everything up, VGA and DVI ports are very old and have become obsolete. If you need to send a signal to a modern display then you will need to use DisplayPort or HDMI connectors. HDMI is the most common standard that is used around the world. You can get DisplayPort connectors on monitors but not on TVs.

HDMI 1.4 is the most common and you will need to use it if you are interested in gaming at 1080p or 1440p. It can support higher refresh rates at both resolutions but if you are interested in gaming at 4K 60 FPS then you will need to go with HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort. You will also need HDMI 2.0 or better if you are interested in taking advantage of HDR.

HDMI 2.0 does not depend on the cable but on the output and input devices. If both your display and graphics card support the feature then all you need to do is turn the feature on. You do not need to change the cable.

USB Type-C is the best connector for laptops because you can do a lot of things with a single connector. It can not only transfer data, it can also transmit audio, video, internet and power. Thunderbolt 3 compatible USB Type-C ports allow you to connect an external graphics card to your laptop in order to get better performance when gaming.
DisplayPort vs HDMI

We all know that in order to connect your PC or laptop to a display you need some kind of wire but the different types of standards can be a bit confusing even for people that are tech savvy.

If you are interested in getting a new display and are looking into the input connections or just need to learn about the different display input or output types then you have come to the right place as here, we are going to look and talk about HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI and VGA connections.

When You are Going to Connect Your Computer to a TV or Monitor – What is the Best Option?

It all comes down to what you are going to be using doing on your computer. Most people will be alright with HDMI as it supports 4K Hz which is ideal for watching movies and the standard also supports 1080p 144Hz which is great for gaming. If you have a high-end PC and like to play games at 4K 60 FPS then you will have an issue with HDMI 1.4 as it does not support 60 FPS at 4K.

You will need to make sure that the standard that you are using is HDMI 2.0 or you could just get a DisplayPort cable instead. With DisplayPort, you have all the features of HDMI 2.0 and much more. If you are interested in learning more about the different features of different standards then be sure to read on.

The major differences are in the features and not in image quality, which is something that you need to keep in mind. A 1080p image will look the same at 60 Hz no matter which cable you are using and which standard you use.

Is DisplayPort better than HDMI?

What is HDMI ?

HDMI is a modern standard and pretty much any display will have an HDMI port whether it is a TV or gaming monitor. There are multiple kinds of HDMI standards in 2019. HDMI 1.4, for example, supports multi-channel audio unlike other options on this list and can also transfer ethernet data. The standard also supports superior color depth. HDMI also supports a wide variety of video formats including up to 4K at 30 Hz.

There are a couple of drawbacks of using HDMI 1.4. There is no locking mechanism to hold the connector in place, unlike DVI and VGA. It is limited to 4K at 30 FPS, so if you are interested in gaming at 4K 60 FPS then you will have to choose a better connector. It also does not officially support 21:9 aspect ratio ultrawide monitors which have become popular in 2019. It also does not support multiple concurrent video streams.

HDMI 2.0 is a newer standard which gets rid of most of the issues that we have stated here but there is still no locking mechanism to hold the connector in place. It is worth mentioning that this is the most popular standard that is used all over the world. HDMI connectors are available in different sizes. A full-size HDMI connector is called Type A, there is a mini version that is called Type and there is an even smaller micro version called Type D that can be used with smartphones or tablets.

You might think that you need a new cable to switch from HDMI 1.4 to 2.0 but that is not the case. The change is in the output device and the input device rather than the cable. This means that your graphics card and display need to support HDMI 2.0 and that you do not need to change the cable.

HDMI Cable

What is DisplayPort?

Unlike HDMI DisplayPort does have a locking connector. It can be converted to any other standard that is included on this list, even the outdated VGA standard. DisplayPort 1.2 supports 4K at 60 FPS and multiple video streams. It can transfer audio and network data with video and also supports other data signals. The standard supports stereoscopic 3D and officially supports 21:9 aspect ratio ultrawide monitors as well.

The DisplayPort 1.3 standard makes things even better and supports 8K at 60 Hz, 4K stereoscopic 3D and adaptive sync that removes screen tearing from games. One of the cons is that you can only find these connectors in gaming monitors and not in TVs. DisplayPort 1.4 is a relatively new standard that is being adopted slowly. This standard can support 8K but can also support 4K at 144 Hz.

Keep in mind that 4K 144 Hz monitors are not common and that if you are able to find one then you will have to pay a hefty premium for it. Another thing to keep in mind is that you will need an extremely powerful PC in order to run games at 4K 144 FPS. The top of the line graphics card from Nvidia, the RTX 2080 Ti is marketed to run games at 4K 60 FPS and reducing the in-game settings might give you an extra frame but realistically you are not going to hit 144 FPS at 4K.

Unless some miracle graphics card comes out in the upcoming few months or so that can run games at 4k 144 FPS this is not something that we can recommend. It does mean that DisplayPort 1.4 is a future-proof standard and that if you do choose this connector then you will be using it for a long long time.

DisplayPort cable
DisplayPort Cable

What is DVI?

DVI is actually much better than VGA but is becoming obsolete with each passing day. You have two screws on either side just like what you get with VGA but the connector is physically larger and it is often white. DVI connectors are available in a number of types such as DVI-I and DVI-D. With inexpensive adapters, it can drive not only DVI but HDMI and VGA display as well. A single link DVI link is limited to 1920×1200 resolution at 60 Hz but a dual link connection can support 2560×1600 at 60 Hz which is very impressive indeed compared to what VGA offers you.

There are a couple of drawbacks when using DVI. The connector us bulky and it does not support the modern variety of color spaced and it cannot cover audio. DVI interface has not been able to keep up with other standards and that is why companies like AMD, Nvidia or even Intel have stopped supporting it.

DVI plug
DVI Cable

What is VGA?

The VGA connector is the Blue one that has two screws on either side. This is a very old type of connector and can be used if you need to connect your PC to a projector or older display but that is pretty much all that it can be used for in 2019. This is an analog standard so you will notice signal degradation due to cable length, wire gauge and digital conversion. The maximum resolution on paper is 2048×1536 at 85 Hz but the image is not going to be very sharp.

VGA interface has not been able to keep up with other standards and that is why companies like AMD, Nvidia or even Intel have stopped supporting it.

The Difference in image quality

You might have noticed that we have talked about the pros and cons of each standard but have not really mentioned that image quality that each has to offer. The reason behind this is that unless you are a designer of some sort and have specific needs, a digital standard is a digital standard and everything will pretty much look the same at a given resolution unless your cable is faulty.

What about HDR?

HDR or High Dynamic Range is becoming widely available as streaming services like Netflix and Amazon are promoting it for a better viewing experience. HDR enables the user to see a greater range of detail across the light spectrum.

HDR implementation in games is fairly limited and some games have poor HDR implementation but that is fine as this is a relatively new technology and developers will be able to implement it properly with the passage of time. In order to take advantage of this feature, you need a display that supports the feature and you also need HDMI 2.0. You will not have the same experience with HDMI 1.4. This is something that you need to keep in mind.

Remember that the new standard does not depend on the HDMI cable but the output device and the display. If your TV or monitor is HDR enabled and your graphics card supports the feature as well then you do not need to change the cable you just need to turn the feature on.

VGA plug

What about USB Type-C?

When Apple released the 2016 MacBook it removed all the ports in favor of the USB Type-C port. While there was some backlash at the time, 2019 the adoption is much better and not only are other laptop manufacturers offering USB Type-C ports but we also see this port on tablets and smartphones.

USB Type-C is the best connector for laptops because of its versatility. It is fully reversible and offers cross-platform compatibility. Not only can it be used to output video, it can also be used to transfer data, transmit audio power and even internet. You can get all kinds of dongles and connect different devices to your laptop with only a single port. That is very impressive indeed. While you do need dongles for older devices, USB Type-C adoption is on the rise and this might as well become the universal standard in the upcoming years.

USB Type-C cables

Another interesting feature that USB Type-C offers is Thunderbolt 3. This feature allows you to connect an external graphics card to your laptop. While an internal graphics card is always going to be better than an external one it does offer significant gains in performance compared to an integrated graphics solution.

You can connect your laptop to an external enclosure and the same port can not only deliver additional graphics power but it can also give you internet and power as well. That is impressive keeping in mind that only a single port is being used for all these functions at the same time. Thunderbolt 3 can also be used to daisy chain multiple monitors. This means that monitors will be connected with one another but you only need to plug in a single cable to your laptop rather than populating an individual port for every display which might not be possible if you use 3 monitors.

If these include stress on your eyes or headaches, then protecting your eyes with a pair of gaming glasses might help you. But even if you don’t have any issues, a pair of gaming glasses can still make your gaming experience much more enjoyable.

Does Gaming Glasses Really Work?

Computer Eyewear for gaming

Many gamers do not know what happens when you sit in front of a display for too long.

Here we are going to look into why you need gaming glasses and how they work.

Why You Need Gaming Glasses?

Excessive gaming causes eyestrain. It’s a collective term used for a number of problems such as dryness, redness, swelling, headaches and itchiness. Gaming glasses can prevent all these things from happening.

They protect the eyes by blocking harmful blue rays.

Getting a pair of glasses might not seem like a major decision and you might be tempted to buy the cheapest option on the market. That is not something that we can recommend. Here are some things that you should keep in mind when in the market for gaming glasses.

Things to Consider Before Buying Gaming Glasses

Here are some factors that you need to look into when buying glasses for gaming.

Comfortable Fit

This is the most important factor one should consider when buying eyewear. Without a comfortable fit, you cannot have full focus on the game you are playing.

Most glasses come with spring hinges which are ideal for a comfortable fit. You should also check whether the glasses are compatible with your gaming headsets.

Lens

The Lens is the component through which Blue light is filtered. Look for robust lenses that do not scratch easily. Many gaming goggles come with anti-scratch and abrasion resistant lens technology.

Tint

No matter which type of gaming glasses you buy, they will be tinted. Bright tints block more Blue light but also distort colors. Light tints are not as protective against Blue light but they do not distort colors.

Things to Consider When Buying an Extended Mouse Pad

A mouse pad might not seem like a major purchase and you might be tempted to pick up the cheapest option on the market. That is not something that we can recommend. If you are in the market for a new mouse pad then there are a couple of things that we recommend you keep in mind.

Top Surface

The top surface of an extended mouse pad is what matters the most as it is going to be in direct contact with your mouse. You need to check whether the texture is smooth or not. If not then moving the mouse will be a bit tricky.

Thickness

The thickness can give you an idea of the comfort that the mouse pad offers to your wrists while gaming. If your hands tire easily then you should look into getting a thicker mouse pad.

Stitching

Premium stitching ensures that the mouse pad will last a long time and that it will not fray or curl over time.

Base

The base is in contact with the top of your desk. If the base is made of rubber then this will ensure that the mouse pad will stick to your desk and will not slip.

What is a Good Sound Card for Gaming?

PC sound card for gaming

If this is your first time getting a sound card or are just looking for more information regarding your potential purchase then you have come to the right place. Here we are going to look into why you should get a sound card and different factors that you need to consider when getting one.

Do You Need a Sound Card?

Modern motherboards come with built-in audio which can provide decent audio and plenty of features such as 5.1 audio. The built-in audio should be enough for basic needs but if you are interested in listing to high-quality digital audio and gaming then you might want to look into getting a sound card that provides better audio and features such as additional inputs.

Audio files are lines of code, like any other files that we have on a PC. Sound files can store information but a PC cannot produce waves that need to go through the air and into our ears in order for our ears to hear something. That is why you a digital to analog converter in order to convert the digital files into audio. That is where a sound card comes in.

The reverse is true as well. While the digital files are converted to analog a mic will be used for gaming as well and that is going to be connected into the sound card as well. Hence the sound card will convert analog audio into digital format as well.

All the components in your system create electrical interference and that can result in hissing sounds or distortions of other kinds. This is not ideal for an immersive gaming experience. This interference can reach you through headphones or speakers.

While modern motherboards are able to provide minimal distortion and reduce noise, they are not all that impressive when it comes to sound amplification. That is where a dedicated sound card comes into handy.

Different Kinds Of Sound Cards

There are three main kinds of sound cards that should know about. They are as follows:

USB Sound Cards

USB sound cards use the USB interface. They are easy to use because they are easy to use and install. Connecting a USB sound card to your device is like connecting your smartphone via USB or any other USB powered device.

If you are planning on using the sound card with a laptop then you should keep in mind the number of USB slots that you have available and which of them are unused. These are useful because you cannot open up a laptop and replace the internal sound card. If you are planning on getting a sound card for your laptop, then a USB card is what you want to get.

Internal Sound Cards

Unlike USB sound cards, internal sound cards need to be installed inside your PC. These are usually larger than USB options and look like graphics cards but smaller. Similar to what we talked about in our best external graphics card for laptop review. You need to open up your PC and install the card in one of the PCIe slots in order for it to work. This is a PCIe solution and that is why these cards often provide better audio quality as compared to USB options.

Onboard Sound Cards

Onboard sound cards are the integrated solutions that you get on your motherboard. This might not be the best option but it comes with your motherboard and will provide decent audio keeping in mind that it does come for free.

Surround Sound

While motherboards are great for providing decent audio, dedicated sound cards can provide surround sound. Most sound cards provide 5.1 audio which means that you can use the card to hook up 5 speakers and a sub-woofer. Newer cards come with 7.1 audio which allows you to set up 7 speakers and a sub-woofer.

Upgrading Sound Cards

While motherboard audio cannot be replaced, it can be disabled in order to use a dedicated card that will perform much better as compared to onboard audio. A dedicated sound card can be removed if it is needed to be repaired or replaced. That is one of the benefits of having a sound card instead of onboard audio that the motherboard comes with.

Signal To Noise Ratio

Signal to noise ratio (dB) will tell you about the quality of sound that the sound card will provide. 100 dB is ideal but if you want super clean sound and want the best then you should look for a sound card that offers 124 dB or more. 100 dB is more than enough for gaming and editing but if you want premium sound then you can opt to get to get a sound card that offers better sound quality.

Sampling Rate

The sampling rate is another indication of performance. To give you a benchmark a regular phone call has a sampling rate of 8 kHz. The onboard audio is able to provide 44 kHz. A dedicated sound card, on the other hand, is able to take that up to 96 kHz. That should give you an idea of what a dedicated sound card is capable of providing as compared to the onboard audio solution that your motherboard comes with. This is why it is a good option to consider getting a sound card for a better gaming experience.

Ports And Connections

A sound card has plenty of ports that you can take advantage of but you also need to keep in mind the ports that you need. The following are some of the ports and connections that you get with a dedicated sound card:

  • Output for headset
  • headphones
  • Output for active speakers
  • Input for recordings
  • Gaming microphone input
  • Input for RCA jacks or
  • jack analog
  • Outputs and digital inputs

Does Sound Cards Boost FPS?

Sound cards do take some load off the CPU and some people think that translates into higher FPS in games but that is not the case. A sound card will not get you better performance in games. The CPU and GPU will play a role in providing you with the performance you need in-game. Whether you have a sound card or not makes no noticeable difference when playing games.

Invest In High-quality Headphones

A sound card might be an expensive piece of hardware for your PC but if you decide to get a high-end sound card then you will need a pair of headphones that support the sound card and is able to deliver the level of sound that the sound card is able to produce. If you have a decent sound card but a cheap pair of headphones then you are wasting the potential that the sound card has to offer.

Design

Sound cards come in all kinds of designs. The least expensive are the ones that are bare and come with no kind of shroud whatsoever. There are others that are better looking and come with shrouds. These are available in different colors and can be matched to the rest of your build. Some sound cards come with additional features such as LEDs and RGB lighting.

If you do get a sound card with RGB lighting then you can sync it with the rest of your build and have it light up all the same. Furthermore, some cards are bigger than the others and that is something to keep in mind when you are in the market for one. If you are building a small form factor build then the size of the card is something that you need to keep in mind. While a regular sound card will fit into an ATX case, you will have a hard time fitting the same card into a smaller build.

How Much Money Should You Spend On A Sound Card?

The amount of money that you should spend on a sound card depends on a couple of factors. It depends on the budget that you have and the features that you are looking for in a sound card but we are still going to give you some pointers on what you can or should do with your money. Keep in mind that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to how much money you should spend on a sound card.

If you do not have onboard audio or need to replace it then $20-40 should be more than enough. You will get the ports that you need for the money. If you have onboard audio but are looking for a sound card that can support your headphones or sound system then you can spend anywhere between $40-80 on a sound card.

If what you are looking for is high-quality clean audio then you should be able to get what you are looking for in under $150. If gaming is not the only thing that you are interested in you also happen to be a professional music maker then you can spend up to $200. That budget will be more than enough to get you what you are looking for.

As mentioned before the money that you spend depends on your budget and what you are looking for. It is possible that you do have working onboard audio and want better audio for gaming but want the best that money has to offer. In that case, you might be interested in spending more than what we have mentioned here.

Things will be more complicated if you are on a tight budget and are looking for the best value for money. The challenge is finding the best audio quality and the most features without spending too much money. We have provided you with a couple of recommendations that should be able to make it easier for you to pick the one that is best for you.

Is Getting A Sound Card Worth It?

Sound cards provide better sound and additional ports as compared to the built-in audio solution that your motherboard comes with. Audiophiles will swear that sound cards are worth the investment but others will point you in the other direction. So, are they worth buying at the end of the day?

You need to keep in mind that if you are getting a sound card then you will most likely need to get additional equipment as well. This could include new high-end speakers or headphones or an amp that will amplify the sound that your speakers and headphones receive. This equipment comes at a cost that is not included in the price that you are paying for the sound card, so that is something that you need to factor in when buying a sound card.

An external Module Makes Life Easier

An external module is an extension of the sound card that sits outside the PC. You can set it up on your desk or anywhere else that you might seem fit. The external module provides a couple of ports and other features that make it easier to plug in headphones and your mic. The additional ports can be used for other purposes.

Some modules come with USB ports that allow you to connect a headset or other devices that you might need to power. Some modules come with volume knobs that help you control the volume without leaving the game. External modules might also come with RGB lighting and colors that blend with the rest of your build.

This is an important factor to keep in mind if you are in the market for a new sound card. Without an external module, you will find yourself looking behind your PC every time you need to remove or plugin headphones, a mic or speakers.

Playing Blu-ray Audio Without A Sound Card

You will need a sound card if you are interested in taking advantage of Blu-ray high fidelity digital audio. Using a sound card will give you proper audio and video. If you are using a sound card then you will be able to listen to high-quality audio at 96 kHz with 24-bit resolution with 7.1 surround sound support.

If you choose to go with 5.1 audio then you will be able to hear the audio at 192 kHz with 24-bit resolution. To give you an idea of what you are getting, consider that a simple CD is able to deliver 44.1 kHz at 16-bit resolution. While if you do use a sound card you will be able to take advantage of all the additional quality that the format has to offer.

If you do not use a sound card then the audio quality will be sampled down and what you will get is a 48 kHz sampling rate at 16-bit. This is another factor to keep in mind when in the market for a new sound card and if you are going to use your PC to play Blu-ray movies then you should take advantage of the sound quality that a sound card has to offer.

Is Getting A Sound Card Worth It

Final Words

Sound cards provide better sound and additional ports as compared to the built-in audio solution that your motherboard comes with. Audiophiles will swear that sound cards are worth the investment but others will point you in the other direction.

Getting a sound card means getting better audio quality especially if you are interested in viewing Blu-ray content on PC. If you are looking for a sound card then you should consider getting one that comes with an external module so that you can control volume setting without leaving the game and can connect speakers, headphones and mics without going to the back of your PC every single time.

Sound cards are expensive and if you feel that you can make do without one then rest assured that the onboard audio on your motherboard can do a good job at providing decent audio.
